STATUS UPDATE ON THE QEW CREDIT RIVER BRIDGE REHABILITATION HOLDING STRATEGY

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has initiated two studies in the vicinity of the QEW Credit River Bridge.

The first study is the QEW Credit River Bridge Rehabilitation Holding Strategy Study (or, Holding Strategy). The purpose of the Holding Strategy is to develop and implement an interim rehabilitation strategy to maintain the safe use of the existing QEW Credit River Bridge until planning, design, and construction of the long term strategy for the bridge can occur. The Holding Strategy Study will address the immediate needs of the bridge.

The second study is the QEW Credit River Bridge Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study (or, Preliminary Design Study). The purpose of the Preliminary Design Study is to determine a long-term strategy to address the rehabilitation needs of the QEW Credit River Bridge and to address the future requirements for the QEW from west of Mississauga Road to west of Hurontario Street.

Construction of the Holding Strategy is currently underway, and is expected to be completed by Fall 2012.

PURPOSE

  • Develop and implement a holding strategy for the Bridge for a period of 10 to 15 years. The existing bridge deck has reached its service life but cannot be replaced now due to high traffic volume on QEW.
  • Full rehabilitation of the existing bridge can only be undertaken after the twinned bridge is constructed.

  • Replace the bridge expansion joints, including the reconstruction of expansion dams;
  • Replace asphalt surface course with new asphalt and place final pavement markings; and,
  • Remove existing median lighting and replace with “Elizabeth Regina (ER)” heritage light standards on both sides of the bridge.

A 4 m wide gravel road is being constructed for access and material delivery to the underside of the QEW Credit River Bridge structure for the rehabilitation work underneath the bridge deck. The construction access is about 500 m long with 10% maximum grade. The entrance / exit of the construction access is located on Mississauga Road, on the north side of the QEW.
